π How to read these charts
Every term used on this page, in one place. Ratios are computed on trailing twelve months (the last four reported quarters) unless stated otherwise, so a single seasonal quarter never distorts them.
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| TTM | Trailing twelve months β the last four reported quarters added together. Used instead of a single quarter so seasonality and one-off quarters do not distort a ratio. |
| YoY | Year-on-year: this quarter against the same quarter a year earlier. |
| Gross margin | Revenue less the direct cost of the product, as a share of revenue. What the product itself earns before any company overhead. |
| Operating margin | Operating profit as a share of revenue β after R&D and SG&A, before interest and tax. |
| Net margin | Net profit as a share of revenue, after everything including tax. |
| EPS (diluted) | Net income per share, assuming every option and convertible is exercised. |
| FCF | Free cash flow: operating cash flow minus capital expenditure. The cash left over for dividends, buybacks and debt repayment. |
| ROE | Return on equity: profit Γ· shareholders' equity. Flattered by debt, since borrowing shrinks the denominator. |
| ROA | Return on assets: profit Γ· total assets. Unflattered by debt, and correspondingly lower. |
| ROIC | Return on invested capital: after-tax operating profit Γ· (debt + equity). The cleanest read on whether the business earns more than its capital costs. |
| P/E | Price Γ· earnings per share. Dollars paid for one dollar of annual profit. Undefined when earnings are negative. |
| P/S | Price Γ· revenue per share. Used where there is no profit to divide by. |
| P/B | Price Γ· book value per share (assets β liabilities). Informative for banks; close to meaningless for software. |
| EV | Enterprise value: market cap + total debt β cash. What buying the whole business outright would cost. |
| EV/EBITDA | Enterprise value Γ· earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation. Compares companies before financing and accounting choices diverge. |
| Drawdown | How far below its own running all-time high the price sits, in percent. |
| Volatility | Standard deviation of daily returns, annualised. A measure of how far the price typically wanders, not of which direction. |
| CAGR | Compound annual growth rate: the single yearly rate that turns the first close into the last. |
| Max drawdown | The deepest peak-to-trough fall in the stored history β the worst loss a buy-and-hold holder would have sat through. |
